About the Event

Good contacts to foreign armed forces led the OG Thun to organise an international shooting competition. The first of these was held in 2010, with participants from Germany and Austria. In 2013, the first actual International OG Thun Shooting Competition was created. The aim of the event was to enable participants to get a glimpse of the Swiss Military and shooting traditions.

The event generated great interest. Up to 140 participants per year from 10 different nations have taken part in recent years.

To take part, participants are expected to show a high degree of discipline and commitment: The event is lead in a military fashion with a fixed programme and there are parts of it that require a base amount of physical fitness.

Besides the shooting with different Swiss weapons for possible distinctions, there is also often a troop visit. Additionally, there oftne are excursions related to military or cultural history. At the ceremonial reception, representatives of military or political  groups may attend and the coveted distinctions are awarded.

Logistically, the event is supported by the Society of Swiss Military Motor Vehicle Drivers VSMMV, other military societies, the shooting clubs Wimmis/Thun/vicinity and by the municipality of Wimmis, in which the military accommodations are used.

Throughout the whole event, the companionable contact/exchange between soldiers and other participants from different nations is important. Thus, the participation of Swiss soldiers is also very welcome.
